I have seen articles and posts commenting on the mass layoffs (layoffs) happening in technology companies and how this has affected the technology market and the people working there.

According to data from Layoffs Brasil, 56 companies, and 6344 people were fired.

Being fired is very bad, a blow to self-esteem, even when the person making the dismissal says you are a great professional, but the company’s priorities have changed.

Thankfully, we have a community ready to support people going through layoffs. Marcell Almeida analyzed layoffs and their impact on the product manager’s career in an article he published on the PM3 Courses blog this week. Paulo Chiodi constantly uses the Product Guru’s reach to help people who have gone through layoffs. Pablo Silva has also used the reach of his network to publish lists of people who have gone through a layoff. Paulo Caroli has a “Join now, pay later” initiative in Caroli.org courses to help laid-off people gain more knowledge to help them find their next opportunity. I have also been offering free enrollment in my courses for people who have been laid off and still haven’t found a new opportunity.

On the other hand, as the optimist that I am, I propose a perspective that I have not seen much in these discussions about mass layoffs here in Brazil, but I have seen in some American articles about layoffs in tech. Is it a look to see the “glass half full”, that is, what opportunities could be created by this moment of mass layoffs?

We have a lot of good people who, because they’ve been laid off, have some free time, and they’ve received a severance package that might put them on a cushion for a few months. I imagine they have complete teams with product people, product designers, and engineers who already know how to work together.

Wouldn’t this be a good time to invest in getting that idea out of the drawer? To do a proof of concept to see if anyone is interested? Who knows, maybe the next successful startups and even the next Brazilian unicorns will be born!
